Voids and Minimalist Techniques in Art
Minimalism and empty space are both important techniques used in art to create a sense of simplicity, clarity, and elegance. These techniques involve the use of negative space or empty areas in a composition to emphasize the subject and create a sense of balance and harmony. In minimalist art, the emphasis is on the use of simple forms and limited colors, with a focus on the essentials. For artists such as Ivan Mestrovic and Paul Sibuet, simplicity, and minimalism are key elements and defining factors that make their art so strikingly unique.
Combining Science and Minimalism: Ivan Mestrovic's Art
Artist Ivan Mestrovic uses his profound knowledge of physics and engineering to create magnificent futuristic-looking sculptures. With minimalism, The aim is to create a composition that is stripped down to its bare bones, leaving out any unnecessary details or distractions. Eliminating extraneous elements makes the artwork more direct, powerful, and profound. Through his fascination with architecture, Mestrovic's passion has led him to find a medium between art and science, and when mixed, they give us the magic that sparks fascination. His signature trademark is his large, egg-shaped sculptures that are cutting-edge and remarkable. Each egg is designed with luxury textures and materials such as marble or gold. In his sculpture called 'Blanco Macael Brazilian Blue Granite,' he combines granite and marble to create a stunningly unique masterpiece of technological triumph.
Light, Shade, and Empty Space: Paul Sibuet's World
Using empty space and expertly manipulating light and shade to spotlight the irregularity of his medium's forms, Paul Sibuet's artwork evokes a sense of endless possibility existing between reality and the unknown. His structures, shapes, colors, lines, and materials flow like unstructured movements that seem to be frozen in time. Sibuet's artwork often features small segments of busy, messy displays, such as a shelf with used paints. At the same time, most of the remaining space is empty, giving the viewer's imagination space to roam free. In his artworks, Sibuet employs luxurious materials and textures, as seen in 'Marbre Blanc,' an exquisite marble artwork set against a vast blank space and complemented by two small shelves filled with miniature used and spilling paints.
The Significance of Focal Points in Art:
In addition to empty space and luxury textures, minimalistic art often relies on the use of focal points to create a sense of visual interest and balance within the artwork. Due to the limited use of colors, textures, and shapes in minimalistic artwork, each element carries more weight and significance to the meaning and identity of the overall concept. Paul Sibuet often uses an image of a spilled paint can with paint that spills onto the floor. Ivan Mestrovic, on the other hand, will often use a gold line in his minimalistic egg sculptures, like in his artwork called 'Bianco Carrara - Gold Egg.'
Breaking Boundaries in Contemporary Art
In minimalist art, the emphasis is on the use of simple forms and limited colors, with a focus on the essentials. By allowing space to exist around an object or form, the artist can emphasize its importance and create a sense of depth and balance. For contemporary artists Paul Sibuet and Ivan Mestrovic, the use of minimalism and empty space are critical factors in what makes their artwork so cutting-edge and distinct.
